"Be silent. Be still. You must comply. You must follow. The portals are our gateway. You are required. We will use the portal to bring you back to the Hive. You will be slaves. You will be cattle. There will be no escape. There will be no failure. We will bleed you, and your world, dry."

Ruloi

The Ruloi (also spelled Ru-Loi) are a race of strange, parasitic entities from another world and powerful enemies encountered in both Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny and Lands of Lore III.

The Ru-Loi are tall, thin and covered from head-to-toe in pulsing red markings. Their flesh is a deep purple color and have large black eyes with no discernible ears or mouth. Despite this, they possess they ability to communicate through telepathy, even capable of possessing the minds of lesser beings. These powers of the mind extend to levitation, which appears to be their preferred method of mobility. They maneuver well in the air and have a habit of attacking quickly and running off to avoid retaliation. They are adept with other forms of magic, casting hostile plasma-based spells while hovering from range. This magical nature makes them difficult to defeat with spells.

Ru-Loi have a caste system, with drones representing the bottom rung, while the larger, sleeker Warrior versions are the combat elite. Although powerful in their own right, drones are vulnerable to physical attacks, and while they primarily sense through motion, their simple minds are still confused when in the presence of invisible objects or individuals. Ruloi Warriors on the other hand are far more intelligent than their lesser cousins and are not fooled by invisibility, while bony plates cover most of their bodies affording them significant protection during close range fighting. Lastly the Ruloi Collective appear to form the highest tier, a quivering mass of numerous Ruloi conjoined into one monstrous being in what might be some mysterious mating ritual. The pods expelled from the Collective during it's life cycle are it's main defense, and they possess the same strengths and weaknesses as the whole. All forms of Ruloi are immune to earthly poison, stoning, freezing and draining and are at the very least resistant to light, stun and acid and magic, both mundane and ancient.[1][2][3]

History[]

The Ru-Loi are not natives to the Lands and have no affinity for the other races who dwell there, taking what they need and eradicating what remains. They routinely take non-Ruloi (typically Humans or Huline) captive and enslave or preform vile experiments upon them. This is especially true for women, whose femininity the Ruloi apparently derive some magical power from. They invaded the Southern Continent sometime after the ascendance of the Ancients and the mass exodus of the Dracoids, hungry for power, magic and domination. Their level of technology far surpasses any other mortal race. They are able to travel through space, regenerate their physical forms upon death, and harness various plasma-based machinery and architecture, including force fields that can stifle a mystic's ability to teleport. Their Great Forge located high in the Claw Moutains can even imbue mortal weapons with enough power to kill an Ancient. They require vessels and are bound to the power of the Dreamstones, branding their young to receive the communion of the stones, whose power then becomes their own.

During the events of the Prohpecy of Belial, the Golden Age-era Huline Temple had long since been abandoned and looked after by the former priest, a lone Caretaker. In order to gain entry, Luther journeyed to the Claw Mountains where the Ruloi landed their great Citadel. Therein he defeated the creatures and freed the enslaved captives, including Mistress Dawn. Later on, the native Ruloi of Tsul Darn took advantage of the Portal Crisis, using the newly created opening to abduct Gladstonians and bring that back to the hive. Copper LeGre then went through to the portal world, recovered the missing shard from the Shining Path, and eventually closed the gateway to their world and the Lands.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

Trivia[]

  • The Ru-Loi are heavily implied to be extraterrestrials (ie aliens).
  • The Ruloi's connection to the Dreamstones along with the ancient Huline implies the Ruloi and the Ancients had at one time made contact with each other, although this remains unclear.
